The news for X-Men Origins: Wolverine is pouring in now, and it seems they're going all-out with this one as new mutants are seemingly added every day.
The most tantalizing of the news for the fanboys is that Ryan Reynolds will show up as wisecracking antihero Deadpool. Apparently this was supposed to be kept a secret, so it's unclear whether the role is a bona fide supporting role or just a cameo.
Also among cast additions are Dominic Monaghan (Lost, Lord of the Rings) as a mutant named Barnell, Danny Huston as the young William Stryker himself, Lynn Collins as the Silver Fox (a famous figure from Wolverine’s past), and Daniel Henney as Agent Zero, a member of the Weapon X program that gave Wolverine his adamantium skeleton.
Liev Schreiber was originally thought to be Stryker but now it’s all but confirmed that he’ll in fact be playing Sabertooth. It’s also rumored that Friday Night Lights’ Taylor Kitsch has landed the role of (finally!) Gambit. Word is they even made him sign on for a three-picture deal...
The film is set (mostly) seventeen years before the events of the X-Men films (which makes Gambit’s inclusion a little tricky since he’s supposed to be roughly Rogue’s age, but we’ll see how it shakes out). Gavin Hood (Rendition, Tsotsi) directs.
Last but not least, Fox revealed the first promotional still for the film, which features Hugh Jackman back for a fourth time in the title role. Since Jackman’s a big Hollywood star and all now, I’m glad he hasn’t shunned the character that turned him into one. Check it out:
