Remember all those countless articles about the rivalry between the new high-def home-entertainment formats, Blu-Ray and HD-DVD? Blu-Ray's winning.
HD-DVD isn't lying down dead just yet. But it isn't as close a competition as they would like, either. According to a Hollywood Reporter article, Blu-Ray discs made up 70% of high-def disc sales in the first quarter, compared to HD-DVD's 30%.
Six studios back Blu-Ray, while only 3 back HD-DVD. However, when a studio decides to release a movie on both formats, such as Warner Bros' The Departed, Blu-Ray still wins (in this case, 53,640 Blu-Ray copies sold to HD-DVD's 31,590).
This is generally good news for technology - the Blu-Ray is generally considered to have greater capabilities - although I still contend the whole thing is bad for most consumers. While the Blu-Ray format offers plenty of cool new possibilities for special features, the actual plain movie experience really can't get noticably better than a DVD on a widescreen TV. Give us some time to enjoy our DVDs! |
