1:30pm today was Paramount Pictures's main presentation at Comic-Con, and they were able to drop some especially tasty bits of news for their upcoming releases. One of the highlights was the panel for the 2008 Star Trek reboot, which featured producer/director J.J. Abrams, producer Damon Lindelof (the two created Lost together), and the screenwriters:

Abrams mentioned that even though he was "more of a Star Wars kid than a Star Trek kid" he wanted to direct the film because after he saw the script, he "would be so jealous if somebody else got to direct it." He then got right down to business: while Captain Kirk has not yet been cast, Spock will be played by...

Zachary Quinto, by far best known as the supervillain Sylar in the hit NBC show Heroes. He came onto the stage, and if you don't know him, he's a spot-on match for Spock:

Quinto had been whispered about online before for the role (mostly thanks to his physical resemblance), but now you can consider this confirmed.

The crowd let out a huge cheer when Abrams revealed the next bit of casting news: Leonard Nimoy, who is of course the original Spock, will appear in the film (although not as an older version of the character). Nimoy appeared onstage and sat next to Quinto:

That was it for the big news concerning Star Trek, because as Abrams reminded us, there will be another Comic-Con to come before the film comes out - it's currently slated for Christmas 2008. Finally, he also mentioned that he has talked to William Shatner, but neither of them want him to appear in the film if it's just a throwaway or a jokey cameo. He hinted that they're currently trying to find a role for him.
