Jack Valenti, the creator of the movie ratings system and original head of the MPAA, died Thursday in Washington, D.C. at the age of 85.
Valenti was Hollywood's biggest political lobbyist and created the ratings system of G, PG, etc. in 1968. While the system has drawn heavy criticism for years (most recently in the documentary This Film is Not Yet Rated), Valenti was always quick to point out that it warded off the inevitable mess that local censor boards would become.
According to the L.A. Times, Valenti's memoir, entitled This Time, This Place: My Life in War, the White House, and Hollywood, will be published next month according to schedule. |
