There was a collective Internet double-take when the title of the new Bond film was revealed:
"Quantum of Solace?
.......
...What does that even mean?"
Now Bond himself, Daniel Craig, has told British GQ that he was ultimately the one who picked the title:
"I was involved in making the decision. Names were coming out, some ludicrous stuff was going back and forth - I can't remember exactly, but you know the sort of thing: 'The Blood On Your Face'.
I knew I didn't want 'death', 'die', 'bleed' or any of those things in the title."
The final title, however incomprehensible, achieves two things: (A) it was the title of an Ian Fleming short story (which featured Bond in it but is in no way the basis for the movie), and (B) there actually is a pun in there -- "QUANTUM" is the name of the evil organization Bond is fighting in the new movie.
But Craig was also quick to put the title in perspective: "The name of a Bond film is not about anything. Live And Let Die? Octopussy? What does it mean? It means very little." ❏
