If you've ever frequented a video store, you probably know what I'm talking about: direct-to-DVD sequels of beloved Disney movies that lack the charm, polish, talent, and general non-crappiness of their predecessors. Tarzan 2, The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride (pictured), and Cinderella 3: A Twist in Time are a few examples.
Well, now they're history. After the upcoming Little Mermaid III, there will be no more direct-to-DVD Disney animated sequels.
The move is part of a small shake-up courtesy of John Lasseter and Ed Catmull, the new heads of DisneyToon Studios (Disney's animation division) since coming over from Pixar when Disney bought back the company last year. They had previously expressed disdain for the quality of the sequels.
Now that Lasseter (who incidentally also directed last year's Pixar hit Cars) and Catmull are in charge, Sharon Morrill, the longtime president of DisneyToon, will "continue in another capacity with the company."
DisneyToon will now produce original direct-to-DVD films. In this case, however, "original" is a relative term: the first will focus on Tinkerbell. |
