Actor Heath Ledger was found dead in a Manhattan apartment at 421 Broome Street, Apartment 5A, this afternoon at 3:31pm.

A masseuse who had an appointment with Ledger was let in by a housekeeper, who then knocked on the bedroom door and subsequently found him naked and unconscious, with pills "scattered around his body," according to the New York Times. An autopsy will be conducted Wednesday.

The police commissioner initially reported that the apartment belonged to Mary Kate Olsen, but later said that this was not the case.

Ledger, a native Australian, became a star in the U.S. with 1999's 10 Things I Hate About You and 2000's The Patriot. He appeared in such films as A Knight's Tale, The Four Feathers, Monster's Ball, and Casanova.

In 2005, Ledger earned an Oscar nomination for Best Actor for his role as Ennis Del Mar in Brokeback Mountain. While shooting the film, he developed a relationship with his co-star Michelle Williams. The two had a daughter, Matilda Rose Ledger, who was born on October 28, 2005. Last September, news broke that Ledger and Williams had split up.

Ledger of course is set to star as the Joker in this summer's The Dark Knight, which has wrapped filming. He can currently be seen in the critically acclaimed ensemble film I'm Not There, and was in the middle of shooting a film for his Brothers Grimm director Terry Gilliam called The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus.
