Oscar Spiel #1: The frontrunners of the Best Picture race so far...

movies that everybody loves, but only gets nominated for its screenplay and maybe one of the actors (in this case Javier Bardem in an apparently brilliant role, although Josh Brolin's getting great notices as well). After all, the Coen brothers don't have a great track record making Best Picture nominees - Fargo is their only one. But the buzz on this one is so good, and its such the type of movies that critics will embrace, it seems like this will be a big player this year. (Nov. 9)

Sweeney Todd: This could absolutely go either way. Being a musical can be a curse on a film more often than it's a blessing; for every Dreamgirls and Hairspray, there's a Producers and Rent. And this is R-rated. And bloody. And pretending in its ads not to be a musical. But it's big-budget and Tim Burton and Johnny Depp, all forces to be reckoned with. (Dec. 21)

There Will Be Blood: The reviews I've read for this film unironically reference Citizen Kane. You can't get higher than that. Daniel Day-Lewis apparently owns the Best Actor race for his role here (although that's what they said about Gangs of New York...) and Paul Thomas Anderson is a critically-beloved director who always gives us something different. The trick will be convincing everybody to award more than just Day-Lewis - but I bet they'll be able to. (Dec. 16)

Charlie Wilson's War: Nobody's seen it. But you've got Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Mike Nichols, and Aaron Sorkin in a period political comedic drama. What could go wrong? (Dec. 25)

The alternates: As I see it, in terms of buzz right now, those six movies are the current frontrunners. But there are plenty more movies waiting in the wings: Juno could easily become this year's Little Miss Sunshine; it looks like just the kind of things audiences (and most critics) will fall helplessly in love with.
