Oscar Spiel #4: National Board of Review winners and revised Best Picture predictions

We’re a week into December now, and that means – finally – that pretty much everything has been seen by somebody. I just caught There Will Be Blood today (it was excellent), and the early reviews for that heretofore wildcard Charlie Wilson’s War are rolling in, too (generally favorable, but not ecstatic enough).

So where does that bring us? Well, it brings us to the National Board of Review. The NBR is one of those groups that announce their awards before the Oscars. (Not a whole lot is known about the NBR except that they may be vampires.) Since they’re usually one of the first groups to do this, and because they have an official-sounding name, people put a lot of stake in their results.

Well, it’s a bit more than that – they award a Best Picture and then also release a Top Ten list of runners-up, and last year, the only Best Picture nominee to not get recognized on the list was The Queen. So get used to some of the titles you see:

Best Film: No Country for Old Men

The Assassination of Jesse James

The Bourne Ultimatum
The Bucket List
Into the Wild
Juno
The Kite Runner
Lars and the Real Girl
Michael Clayton
Sweeney Todd

Supporting Actor: Casey Affleck, The Assassination of Jesse James
Supporting Actress: Amy Ryan, Gone Baby Gone
Original Screenplay (tie): Diablo Cody, Juno and Nancy Oliver, Lars and the Real Girl
Adapted Screenplay: Joel & Ethan Coen, No Country for Old Men

So what does all this mean? In general, it gives a lot of people a boost. Julie Christie is on surer footing for a Best Actress nominee, and it’s nice to see Casey Affleck getting recognized as well. Juno and
