Oscar Spiel #4: National Board of Review winners and revised Best Picture predictions

the NBR, what is the Best Picture race looking like right now?

No Country for Old Men
Sweeney Todd
Atonement
The Kite Runner
Michael Clayton

But...I still can’t bring myself to believe Michael Clayton will make the nomination list. How about we replace it with Juno - which also made the NBR list but just opened, has commercial prospects, and should peak at the exact right time.

If either of those scenarios happened, the NBR would be five for five. So what’s on shaky ground? Judging from this year’s trends, I’d say The Kite Runner. Moviegoers are avoiding political dramas at all costs, and if it tanks, I could easily see There Will Be Blood or Charlie Wilson’s War gaining a lot of ground.

One thing is certain: two months from now, when The Bucket List is the frontrunner for Best Picture, I’ll run across this column and laugh about how wrong I was.
