Oscar Spiel #6: the SAG nominations, plus the rise of There Will Be Blood

With no Oscar Spiels over the holidays, we've got a lot to catch up on. First things first is the monkey wrench known as the WGA strike: over the past few weeks, the guild, NBC, and the organizers of the Golden Globes have been in a frenzy over whether or not the awards show will air, and who will attend.

The problems? Dick Clark Productions, which runs the Globes, is a "struck company," so the WGA is fully planning to picket the event should it air. The Screen Actors Guild, in a show of support, unanimously voted to discourage all of their members from attending -- in other words, all the acting nominees and most of the potential hosts. The latest word is that NBC is looking to delay the ceremony in the hopes that the strike will end soon (which is quite a long shot).

Not only is all this bad for the awards season, it raises the question: if the strike is still going on in late February, will the Oscars even air? More on that as it develops.

Now, down to business and happier things. The SAG award nominations were announced back on December 20th, so sorry about not getting to them until now. (The SAG awards will be televised, January 27th on TBS, thanks to an agreement with the WGA.) The thing about the SAG nominations is that they usually match up to the Oscar nominations like 4 out of 5 in each category (thanks in part due to the fact that SAG actors make up the largest group of Academy members). The complete list - which includes TV and stunt categories - can be found here, but here's a look at the film categories:
