Oscar Spiel #6: the SAG nominations, plus the rise of There Will Be Blood

suppose that's their prerogative.

Finally, Supporting Actress seems pretty standard except for Keener's surprise Into the Wild nomination. She still looks like the weakest link along with Dee; both could get excluded at the hands of Atonement's Saoirse Ronan or Vanessa Redgrave, but neither actresses have gained the support that many thought they would a few months ago.

So those are the SAG nominations; if you haven't guessed by now, they're my favorite precursor award, solely because they're always so close to the real thing.

Of course, there are plenty more precursors, and currently they all seem to be aimed at one film: There Will Be Blood. Paul Thomas Anderson's film is riding a wave of buzz the way No Country for Old Men was in early December, although right now is the better timing: Academy members have to get their nomination picks in by the 12th of this month.

Blood just a few days ago swept the National Society of Film Critics awards, and individual critics groups (latest one: Kansas City Critics) have been giving it their Best Film award all over the place. Does critical love turn into Oscar love? I would say we can wait until the film expands to wide release, but that will be after nomination ballots are due (but, then again, will still give a good idea of the interest level in the film).

With this in mind - and with the failure of films like Sweeney Todd - we could be looking at a Best Picture list that consists of:

No Country for Old Men
There Will Be Blood
Juno
Michael Clayton
Atonement

...With the top alternates being Into the Wild and American Gangster. If only everybody didn't seem to like Michael Clayton so much. Oh well -- till next time...
