Oscar Spiel #7: The official Oscar poster, and my first real predictions

It's still very much up in the air whether or not the Oscar ceremony will go forward thanks to the WGA strike (although the previous story about the DGA making a deal with the AMPTP is a slightly optimistic sign). After the wretched reception to the Golden Globe "press conference" last Sunday, I don't think anybody wants to watch Billy Bush and that other equally vapid chick announce Oscar winners any time soon.

But while everyone scrambles to figure out what to do in the event that the strike is still going on - the chances of which are probably still above 50% - this year's official Oscar poster was released anyway. Created by longtime poster artist Drew Struzan and his son Christian, it's a beauty:

In fact, the classiness of the poster has put me in a good enough mood that I'm going to go ahead and debut my first official predictions for the nominations (which will be announced as usual at a press conference the morning of January 22nd). Before I get to that, however, we need to see what the three top non-actors guilds - Producers, Directors, and Writers - all nominated for their own awards:

PRODUCERS GUILD NOMINEES (Best Motion Picture):

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
Juno
Michael Clayton
No Country for Old Men
There Will Be Blood

DIRECTORS GUILT NOMINEES (Best Director):

Paul Thomas Anderson, There Will Be Blood
Joel & Ethan Coen, No Country for Old Men
Tony Gilroy, Michael Clayton
Sean Penn, Into the Wild
Julian Schnabel, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly

WRITERS GUILD NOMINEES (Best Original Screenplay):

Diablo Cody, Juno
Tony Gilroy, Michael Clayton
Tamara Jenkins, The Savages
Judd Apatow, Knocked Up
Nancy Oliver, Lars and the Real Girl

WRITERS GUILD NOMINEES (Best Adapted Screenplay):

Joel & Ethan Coen, No Country for Old Men
Paul Thomas Anderson, There Will Be Blood
Ronald Harwood, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
Sean Penn, Into the Wild
James Vanderbilt, Zodiac

Notice anything? How about these little tidbits...

Where the heck is Atonement? Good question. It's nowhere to be found - and usually the Producers and Directors guild nominations match up to Best Picture 4 out of 5
