Cinematical has an interesting post up about the possibility of a Superman Returns sequel and director Bryan Singer's schedule. Apparently Singer is attached to direct The Mayor of Castro Street, a biopic about a gay rights activist named Harvey Milk. The producers of the flick, Neil Meron and Craig Zadan, claim that it will be Singer's next project after Valkyrie, the Tom Cruise Hitler-assassination flick which is currently in preproduction.
This comes as a surprise to the rest of the world who assumed that Singer would get to work on the superhero sequel after Valkyrie, which has the tentative title Superman: The Man of Steel. A couple of things could be happening: the producers might be talking up a big game; Singer might be trying to squeeze in all of these projects; or the Superman sequel might be a fading as a viable possibility. Superman Returns was largely considered a disappointment; there were a lot of bad reviews, and the film just barely hit 200 million, making it markedly lower than the same summer's X-Men: The Last Stand, which was all the more ironic considering Singer left the latter to direct the former.
To throw in my own two cents, Superman Returns was pretty crappy, and while I'd hold out hope that a sequel would be really good, I wouldn't mind if one never came to fruition. Besides, as obviously talented as Singer can be, I can't really forgive him for jumping ship from the X-Men and ultimately leaving it in the hands of Brett Ratner. If I ran things, after Valkyrie he'd forget both Superman and the biopic, and go to work on the X-Men spin-off Wolverine instead. |
