Race to Witch Mountain at Comic-Con: A full-blown action movie?

The Race to Witch Mountain had the unfortunate honor of following the Twilight panel, which meant a lot less hysterical 14-year-old-girls. But then the lights dimmed and we were able to see an early version of the first trailer for Race to Witch Mountain.

It's not the quaint little kids' movie the original Escape to Witch Mountain was. They're advertising it like a full-blooded action movie, with car chases, lots of freaky technology, and, well, the Rock.

Dwayne Johnson, that is. The action star came out onstage (as with everybody else, to thunderous cheering), alongside co-star Carla Gugino (who also stars in Watchmen, which has a panel on Friday morning) and director Andrew Fickman. It might seem like Johnson wouldn't gel with the comic book crowd, but as he proved at last year's Get Smart panel, the guy's a movie star for a reason: he has exactly the right amount of charisma and self-deprecation to win over even the most jaded acne-ridden fanboy.

Why did he decide to do the movie? "The paycheck." Some laughter followed, but then he kept going: "I'm not kidding. Disney? Cha-ching."

As in the original Escape from Witch Mountain, there are two child stars in the movie as well, here played by AnnaSophia Robb (Bridge to Terabithia) and Alexander Ludwig. But again, they're trying to push the PG limit. When someone asks whether the movie will have a Spy Kids feel or a Sin City feel, Fickman said neither. With no trace of sarcasm: "We're actually going for more of a 48 Hrs. or a Bourne movie."

Studio talking points to get older people to want to see the movie? Maybe; after all, Fickman and Johnson last collaborated in The Game Plan, which I don't think even Johnson could spin as having a Bourne sensibility. But the trailer was pretty kick-ass and everybody onstage seemed to be having a lot of fun, which isn't necessarily how things have gone at all of these panels. Check out some pics:
