On the MySpace blog of the movie Southland Tales, writer/director Richard Kelly revealed that the film will be able to be finished and released properly.
"We have finally gotten the greenlight from Sony for the additional round of visual effects for Southland Tales," Kelly says. "This is VERY GOOD NEWS for the film!"
While it doesn't have a release date yet, Kelly also notes that the film will be ready for its first public preview screening "sometime mid-summer," and "work is about to begin on the marketing materials."
Southland Tales has been on an extremely rocky road for months. A version of the film that clocked in at over two and a half hours premiered at last year's Cannes Film Festival to almost universally wretched reviews. (There was a small handful of quiet supporters, including the usually fickle J. Hoberman of the Village Voice.) Despite the reception, Sony picked up the film for a U.S. release and worked with Kelly to cut the film down by 27 minutes. "What you will see in theaters will absolutely be my cut of the film," Kelly has previously said.
A similarly rocky experience occured with Kelly's first film, Donnie Darko, which flopped in limited release after opening directly following the 9/11 attacks. It later became a huge cult success on DVD. Whether Southland Tales is up to par with Darko or really is a complete mess remains to be seen.
The film takes place in near-future California and stars The Rock, Seann William Scott, and Sarah Michelle Gellar as - geeks start drooling now - a porn star. |
