Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull premiered at the Cannes Film Festival yesterday and had press screenings across the U.S., so reviews are flooding in this morning. The verdict? Plenty of mixed opinions, but overall pretty good.
- Roger Ebert got really into it and gave it 3 1/2 stars.
- In a preliminary review, Entertainment Weekly's Lisa Schwartzbaum flat-out loves the characters and Spielberg's direction but finds the crystal skull itself a bore.
- Christy Lemire of the Associated Press likes some of the action sequences but calls the flick "unfocused and meandering."
- The trade papers are split: Variety's Todd McCarthy gives it a full-on rave, while the Hollywood Reporter's Kirk Honeycutt says the film "feels like work."
Right now the film's hovering at 76% on Rotten Tomatoes, with 34 positive reviews and 11 negative. Once all is said and done, I imagine the consensus will be that the film measures up to Temple of Doom and Last Crusade but not Raiders of the Lost Ark.
I also saw the movie yesterday, but I still need to do some digesting before I churn out my review. At this point, my opinion seem to be skewing towards Schwarzbaum's. |
