Entertainment Weekly nabbed the scoop that Viggo Mortensen is in early talks to star in The Road, an adaptation of Cormac McCarthy's bestseller that just came out in paperback a few months ago. The project is set to be directed by John Hillcoat (who made the well-reviewed violent Australian Western The Proposition) and is being adapted by Joe Penhall (Enduring Love).
The critically-acclaimed (and Oprah-endorsed) novel follows a father and young son who are some of the last people left on earth as they wander through a foodless, dangerous, and increasingly dark post-apocalyptic America.
By happenstance, I'm in the middle of the book right now, and Mortensen would be absolutely perfect for this role, so I really hope it works out. The book doesn't exactly have a tightly-structured plot (on purpose), so adapting will be tricky, but doable. If they do it right, the movie could be absolutely beautiful.
Mortensen, who has used his Lord of the Rings success to become a leading man not in mainstream Hollywood but rather in more offbeat, critically-acclaimed movies, next appears in David Cronenberg's Eastern Promises. |
