Nothing like the holidays to breathe some life into the box office. While National Treasure: Book of Secrets, Alvin and the Chipmunks, and I Am Legend reigned supreme just like last weekend, a wide array of films were able to make some dough this weekend. Eleven films scored over six million bucks, while a full sixteen boasted seven figures. The top ten estimates, in millions:
With time off from school and work and the holidays now over, many films managed slim declines and some even improved on their grosses from last weekend. National Treasure: Book of Secrets slid just 20% from its opening weekend numbers and banked $35.6 million for a $124 million total. Since the box office usually radically cools down in January, its hard to say how high the Nicolas Cage-led sequel could climb, but the $200 mark isn't out of the question.
The same goes for Alvin and the Chipmunks, which has proven to be the big surprise of the season. Everyone assumed Cage and Smith would clean things up, sure, but Jason Lee and his CGI friends jumped up to second place this weekend, rising 7% to $30 million, and have scored $142 million already - roughly double what the film was expected to make in its entire run.
I Am Legend followed close behind with $27.5 million and will cross the $200 million mark on Tuesday. I've said it before, but it bears repeating: Will Smith is worth every penny.
In fourth place was Charlie Wilson's War with $11.8 million and $34.5 million so far. Hanks is definitely not the Smith-level superstar he was only a few years ago, although the subject matter was stacked against him - this will be the top-grossing film of 2007 to deal with politics
