Nicholas Cage's cheesefest superhero movie Ghost Rider held onto the #1 spot this weekend by a comfortable margin. It's 19.7 million, however, is a steep 57% drop from opening weekend.

Debuting in second place was Jim Carrey's newest attempt at genre-expanding, The Number 23, with 15.1 million - solid for a horror movie, but much weaker than Carrey usually scores with a comedy.

The weekend's other new releases were met with varying results. Reno 911!: Miami debuted to a solid 10.4 million, while The Astronaut Farmer and Amazing Grace got 4.5 and 4.3 million, respectively. That's solid for Amazing Grace, which debuted in 791 theaters, but the gross for The Astronaut Farmer is a disappointment, especially considering its 2,155 theater count.

With the new releases not causing much of a splash, older movies displayed good holds. Bridge to Terabithia had the best, slipping 40% to 13.6 million, good enough for a #3 position. Norbit, Music & Lyrics, and Breach all dipped 41-42% for the 5th, 6th, and 7th spots, respectively. Tyler Perry's Daddy's Little Girls fared worse, dropping a bit over 50%, typical for a Perry film, to 5.3 million.

As for next weekend, the Oscars are unlikely to affect much given that the big winner, The Departed, is already on DVD. The best chance is Dreamgirls' two wins giving it a boost; it has made 101.2 million so far after eleven weeks in release. The Last King of Scotland, which has grossed 14 million so far, might also benefit from Forest Whitaker's win.

This week's top ten (in millions):

  • 1. Ghost Rider - 19.7
  • 2. The Number 23 - 15.1
  • 3. Bridge to Terabithia - 13.6
  • 4. Reno 911!: Miami - 10.4
  • 5. Norbit - 9.7
  • 6. Music and Lyrics - 8.0
  • 7. Breach - 6.2
  • 8. Daddy's Little Girls - 5.3
  • 9. The Astronaut Farmer - 4.5
  • 10. Amazing Grace - 4.3
