The Simpsons Movie shattered all expectations by grossing $74 million in its first three days. No one knew how the adaptation of the very aging television show would do on the big screen as there's no real direct comparison to another film out there. Many were predicting grosses in the $50 million range. I found that to be a bit optimistic, which shows how much I know. The flick benefited from mostly good reviews and a great ad campaign.

Sophomore hits I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry and Hairspray both held up well with percentage drops in the low 40s. Normally Adam Sandler movies fall by more, but since Chuck and Larry had a slightly lower opening than some of his other films, the gross looks to even out and climb to $125 million or so. Hairspray climbed to $59.7 million in its first ten days and looks to end with a similar gross to last year's musical Dreamgirls, which made a bit over $100 million. I daresay buzz for this film is a bit better, though, so smaller declines could allow the film to climb even higher.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix leveled out a little and grossed $17.7 million. Now that the seventh and final book has been out for a week, most diehard fans have finished it and were able to return to the multiplexes. Next week, Phoenix will have surpassed Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban's $249 million final gross and also looks to eventually overtake Chamber of Secrets's $262 million. It will most likely fall short of Goblet
