This weekend's top ten estimates (in millions):
Transformers rocketed to the top of the box office this week and collected $67.6 million over the Friday-Sunday span. While that would be decent on its own, the film has been doing monumental midweek business after opening on Monday night, so its real total stands at $152.5 million over the past seven days. That breaks a few records, including the best Tuesday opening ever. That's a tad misleading since almost no movies ever open on Tuesday, but however you swing it, it's a lot of money. Director Michael Bay rebounded nicely from his first-ever financial failure two years ago (The Island), and also kept the budget reigned in at an economical $145 million. In a summer where the other blockbusters cost around $250 (Spider-Man 3) and even a comedy cost $175 (Evan Almighty), that's something for which to be praised.
Last week's tag-teaming champs Ratatouille and Live Free or Die Hard both held up well, the latter even in the face of Transformers competition. Ratatouille dropped only 38% to $29 million, a better hold than last year's Cars. If it keeps up the good work, hitting that movie's $244 million final gross is possible. Live Free or Die Hard, meanwhile, dropped a bit less than 50% to 17.4 million and has so far made $84. At its current rate it looks like it could hit about $130. That's a nice bounce back for Bruce Willis, who's seen his last five live-action movies all gross less than $40 million.
The week's non-Transformers release was License to Wed, with Robin Williams, Mandy Moore, and John Krasinski. It
