The box office was particularly robust this past weekend as three separate films managed to make over $30 million dollars, according to estimates. As expected, The Incredible Hulk came out on top with $54.5 million; while the tally is less than the $63 million The Hulk scored in 2003, the new film's gross wasn't expected to reach that high. The big surprise was the success of The Happening, which scored $30.5 million - a nice comeback for M. Night Shyamalan after Lady in the Water, despite its R rating and atrocious reviews. But now that it looks to be profitable (the budget was a reported $50 million), the question becomes, how well will it hold up next weekend? The top ten estimates, in millions:
Kung Fu Panda snuck in between the two new releases to grab second place, falling a moderate 43% to $34.3 million. With $118 million in the bank after only ten days, the family film should top $200 million without much of a problem. You Don't Mess with the Zohan, on the other hand, plummeted 57% - much worse than most of Adam Sandler's comedies, including the 44% second-weekend decline of his previous summer flick I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry. While Zohan's opening was comparable to the star's recent films, it now looks to reach only around $100 million, about $25 million less than par.
The rest of the top ten looked familiar. Iron Man and Indiana Jones both inch closer to the $300 million mark, with Iron Man likely to surpass it before this Friday. Sex and the City once again dropped by over 50%, to $10.2 million. Domestic tally looks to reach around $140 million.
