This weekend's top ten (in millions):
Well, it was a slow news week this week, and the activity at the box office mirrored that: Spider-Man 3 remained on top, and a bunch of new releases barely made a dent.
Faring best was 28 Weeks Later, which made off with an estimated 10 million. The film received mix reviews (although it was boosted by a rave in the New York Times) and the gross was on a par with the 9-million opening of its precursor 28 Days Later. It's a so-so opening: while the film doesn't have any of the original cast members, the continuing popularity of the original film must have had the studio hoping for a bit higher launch.'
The other four new releases, however, can be seen as nothing more than outright flops. Georgia Rule, starring Jane Fonda, Lindsay Lohan, and Felicity Huffman, made only 5.9 million (which was still good enough to come in at #3 for the weekend). The future does not look bright for Lindsay Lohan, whom studio execs are slowly realizing is not a bankable star thanks in part to the fact that we can all get our Lindsay fix in any tabloid, anywhere, anytime. The film, by the way, did much worse than Because I Said So, that movie from a few months ago that looked virtually identical, only with generally more appealing stars.
Delta Farce, that other movie that nobody wanted to see starring Larry the Cable Guy, made 3.5 million. That's even worse than his Health Inspector movie last year. (Confession: I have to say, like the Full Metal Jacket-inspired poster.) But even Delta Farce fared much better than the just-plain-sad crash-and-burn act known as The Ex. The film, populated by
