This weekend's top estimates, in millions:
Three new releases arrived in multiplexes this weekend but couldn't beat out the potent pair of movies that reigned the box office last weekend. Bee Movie dropped only 32% to $26 million, which allowed it to jump to first place after coming in second last weekend. American Gangster suffered a larger but still moderate drop of 44% from its monster opening to $24.3 million.
Bee Movie's decline, while commendable, is actually larger than past animated hits in November. Last year's Flushed Away dropped by only 12%, but that was because Veteran's Day fell on a Friday, giving kids the whole extra weekend day to catch the movie.
Gangster, meanwhile, looks to grab the most headlines - with $80 million already in the bank, it looks to easily become Denzel Washington's top-grossing film (after Remember the Titan's $115 mil) and will probably snag a few Oscar nominations as well.
New release Fred Claus delivered a solid opening but failed to become a breakout, making $19.2 million. Anticipation was high for the movie a full year ago with a teaser trailer that looked hilarious; more recent ads played up that it was a family movie with cutesy touches like ninja elves. As such, it failed to connect with Vince Vaughn's usual young-adult fanbase. However, if it manages to stick around, it could make some serious coin as Christmas grows closer.
Tom Cruise suffered his worst wide-release opening since 1984's Legend with Lions for Lambs, which grossed only $6.7 million in its first three days. (Magnolia grossed $22.5 million by the end of its run in 2000.)
Lambs wasn't expected to climb as high as Cruise's normal hits since he took third billing this
