Tyler Perry proved once again that it's foolish to bet against him as his ultra-niche-marketed dramedy Why Did I Get Married? powered its way to a $21.4 million opening. That gave it more than double any other new wide release this weekend, which included movies starring the likes of Mark Wahlberg, George Clooney, and Cate Blanchett. The Game Plan's third weekend also beat out all the other new releases and came in second with 11 million. At the rate it's going, crossing the $100 million mark is not altogether out of the question.

We Own the Night debuted with the best results of the other releases, benefiting from a Departed-like marketing push and the combined starpower of Wahlberg, Joaquin Phoenix, and Eva Mendes. Still, it's $10.8 million opening wasn't what many would describe as "powerful." Ditto for Michael Clayton, which was a tougher sell thanks to its complicated plot but benefited from the A-list talent of Clooney. It opened with a tad less at $10.4 million. Both movies targeted pretty much the exact same audiences so chances are they cannabalized each other to some degree.

The Heartbreak Kid dropped by almost 50% from last weekend's thoroughly underwhelming opening. It looks to end with a head-scratching $40-45 million. The Oscar-baiting sequel Elizabeth: The Golden Age opened with a soft $6.2 million for 6th place thanks to its mostly negative reviews.

With Night and Clayton both fighting each other over the mature-male audience, The Kingdom dropped by over 50% this weekend to $4.6 million. A $50-55 million final is still in the cards. Across the Universe finally expanded to just under 1,000 theaters and made $3.8 million. That diluted its per-theater average down to $4,009, which
