Leading off the Warner Bros. panel this morning was the cast and crew of the upcoming comedy Get Smart. Among those in attendance were Steve Carell, The Rock, Ken Davitian (better known as "that fat naked guy from Borat"), Masi Oka from NBC's "Heroes", and director Pete Segal. Alas, Anne Hathaway skipped out.
After playing a clip from the film, the group fielded questions from the audience. Carell compared the film to a "comedic Bourne Identity," which drew laughs from the assembled crowd of 6,500. But on a more serious note, he said it was an honor to be stepping into the shoes of Maxwell Smart, and that he felt a lot of the humor of the film came from playing it more seriously, i.e. without the smug "I'm in on the joke" attitude that often kills a comic performance.
When Ken Davitian was asked about the major difference between his role as Azamat in Borat and this film, he deadpanned "I got to wear clothes." The Rock chimed in, "Thank God."
For those of you itching for more info on this update of the popular 1965 series, Pete Segal gave us something to chew over. According to Segal, Hymie the Robot will appear in the movie, along with Agent 13. He assured us Agent 13 "will be a cool cameo, but I can't tell you who it is yet." According to rumor mill Wouldyoubelieve.com, Bill Murray is in line for the role. Now that would be cool. |
