Every Monday night our own Dan Deevy hops onto Skype and talks movies and entertainment with one of WTOP’s Best Anchors, Dimitri Sotis. But this week we were given the chance to jump on the air for a second time to discuss the new films hitting theaters and also some alternatives to the box office.

WTOP, 103.5 FM is broadcast throughout the Washington D.C. Metro area but you can listen live every week on wtop.com or find the individual segments right here on TheCinemaSource.

We were absolutely thrilled when Dimitri asked us to lend our opinions to their Thursday night slot generally filled by their movie critic, XX; we only wished there were better things to talk about.

We chat about the major openings including Movie 43, Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters and Parker but really only to say that they would all be a massive waste of your money so you should all stay at home and visit Crackle.com instead to watch all six episodes of the new original series Chosen, starring Heroes alum, Milo Ventimiglia.

Milo Ventimiglia joins us to talk about the thrill of working on this original web series that is honestly as good, if not better, than most shows being produced by major television networks today.

I don’t envy the position that so many movie studios and theater chains are in right now as they fight tooth and nail to continually prove to audiences that they are still relevant.

It’s true that some movies are best seen on a huge screen because of mind blowing special effects or in a communal atmosphere which is more conducive to laughter or terror; but most run of the mill movies can be equally enjoyed by most at home where it doesn’t cost them nearly as much money.

Add to that the fact that Television shows, both network and cable, have gotten so off the charts good AND the fact that Web Based Series have begun to follow suit quality-wise and you’ve got one legitimately petrified industry.

I’ve always believed that the better your competition is, the harder you are going to have to work to stay in the game so in the long run, we all benefit.

For right now, however, I doubt the studio number crunchers are thinking the same thing.

Adding to their burden and to our delight is Crackle.com; a website that brings viewers their favorite movies and TV shows in much the same way that Netflix does. However, in addition to this, they are also creating their own original programming.

Joining their over 40 Original titles this January is Chosen; an action packed thriller starring and executive produced by former Heroes star, Milo Ventimiglia.

Here is the official synopsis for the series:

CHOSEN follows Ian Mitchell (Milo Ventimiglia), a husband, father and lawyer who awakens one morning to discover a mysterious box on his doorstep – and a photo of a stranger he is instructed to kill within the next three days. The action thriller stars and executive produced by Milo Ventimiglia and also stars Diedrich Bader (Office Space, Napoleon Dynamite), Nicky Whelan (Hall Pass, Halloween II), and Brett Davern (Awkward) among others. Chosen is comprised of six half-hour episodes, packed with non-stop action and shocking plot twists, Chosen launches on the multi-platform entertainment network Crackle Thursday, January 17, 2013.

It’s getting harder and harder for movie ad campaigns to drum up excitement when the internet bombards us with hype every day. You’ve got a red-band trailer? Superbad‘s was funnier. A viral game? Dark Knight did it better. Video diaries available exclusively online? Yawn.

R&D Films may have just come up with something new: they’re posting a teaser for their new movie The Divide, directed by Hitman‘s Xavier Gens and starring an ensemble cast which includes Milo Ventimiglia and Rosanna Arquette — but making it available for 24 hours only. Then it disappears.

The fatal flaw in this plan, of course, is that crafty internet users will be able to download the streaming video, then upload it somewhere else, making it available to anyone, any time (sort of like we did below). But maybe that’s not a flaw at all — R&D can drum up initial publicity today with their gimmick, and then let curious surfers seek out the teaser themselves in the days ahead. Hype: built.

Anyway, check it out. It’s pretty cool:

Reminds me quite a bit of The Twilight Zone episode “The Shelter” — and sci-fi fans more well-versed than I can probably drum up plenty of other examples, too. But the mood and the cinematography of this teaser are impressive — enough to pique my curiosity, certainly.
