H-Wood Has Gone To the Dogs

Let’s take a look at the movies that are out in theaters right now, the week of September 24 2012. House At the End of the Street, Trouble With the Curve, Finding Nemo 3-D, Resident Evil: Retribution, Dredd 3-D, Lawless, The Bourne Legacy, 10 Years, ParaNorman, End of Watch, and The Possession.

Now let’s do some elementary math. How many of those movies listed above are remakes, based on a book, sequels, or re-releases? Only a third. To make this a little more obvious, let’s go with the ten highest earning movies within the past ten years. Those movies are: Avatar, The Avengers, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, Transformers: Dark of the Moon, Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, The Dark Knight Rises, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, Toy Story 3, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and Alice in Wonderland.

Did you catch the amount of movies from that list that were not based on a story, comic, or book and not a sequel? One: Avatar. The other ninety percent of the highest grossing movies of the past ten years (not adjusted for inflation) were based on books or were additions to other movie franchises. Don’t get me wrong, I love the Harry Potter movies more than is healthy, but the fat cat movie makers have our recent movie watching behavior down to a science. Or so they think.

Hollywood movie makers have stopped being passionate for great stories and started getting passionate about money. C’mon, don’t you want a third yacht too? And a fourth vacation house, you certainly need that!

With all the remakes happening now I kept asking myself Why don’t they just re-release the old movies? The original Total Recall is still really cool, why not just re-release it? Because a country full of Ritalin’d-out kids just can’t handle anything that’s not shiny and new with the best possible CGI and completely over the top action sequences. Duhh.

H-Wood was once about passion and the sheer love for acting and filmmaking. Now it’s solely about money and fame. Can passion be brought back into the major American film industries?
