I love Jeremy Piven as super agent Ari Gold on HBO's Entourage; in fact he's so good he's really the only reason to watch it. Sometimes the downside of finding that ultra perfect role as an actor is that every other character you attempt to play pales in comparison. It's possible that he just hasn't found another good role since Ari, but my guess is we'll always be seeing him as the King of Agents in Hollywood and that's all.
The Goods: Live Hard Sell Hard is an awful movie. It's a completely stereotypical by the numbers slightly raunchy comedy whose jokes offend more than they entertain. If I see one more of these dumb movies where being gay is constantly referenced as creepy, gross, and only there to be laughed at I'm going to lose it. I'd love to see middle America's reaction to what it actually means to be gay"¦ men that are ten times more attractive than ANY straight guy they know making tons of money having great friends and really enjoying life; here's a little secret we normally try to keep in the community"¦ we're the ones laughing at you most of the time. Beer bellies, hair plugs, bad teeth, a wardrobe composed of whatever was on sale at Kohl's or Target, working towards that pention to finally pay off the house. Yeah, I guess considering all that we'll let ya get away with these low blows in films like this.
Back to the movie. Jeremy Piven plays Don Ready a hired gun in the auto industry (I didn't know those existed either). He and his crew are brought in to failing dealerships to help get them back on their feet. In true movie style selling cars is built up to this monumental undertaking and analogies to war and battle keep being drawn trying to make things appear way more interesting than they really are.
His crew is made up of some great comedic actors who must have lost a bet and were forced into doing this film. David Koechner from Anchorman and 40 Year Old Virgin plays his right hand man who's the object of the 'creepy gay crush.' Ving Rhames is the one actor here that I wanted to like but even his quest to make real 'love' to a woman for the first time did nothing for me. Kathryn Hahn as 'Babs' did her best and had a couple of lines that hit as the hard as nails, use sex as a weapon girl of the group.
The real surprise is James Brolin as the dealership owner more interested in hooking up with the ugly bald man than he is with saving his business and protecting his family. He has some funny moments but overall the character was just too ridiculous to matter.
Again, the movie has some funny moments
If you really wanna see this movie because of Jeremy Piven, as I did, all I can say is"¦ go rent a season of Entourage instead!
