All This ‘Watchmen’ Hype is Getting a Little Ridiculous

It’s only a week and a half until Watchmen opens — though if you’ve been following the film online, you may feel like you’ve seen it already.
That’s because, oh, a dozen or so clips have been released online. In addition to all the ancillary material, like the trailer for the tie-in DVD Tales of the Black Freighter, or viral sites like TheNewFrontiersman.net. In fact, TrailerAddict.com is hosting seventy-three Watchmen-related videos, be them clips or featurettes or trailers.
Then there are the reviews — or, should I say, the “non-reviews.” Warner Bros. has asked the press not to publish any reviews until the day the film opens — not an uncommon practice — so in order to get around this, sites (from geek sites like CHUD to corporate powerhouses like Time) have simply publishing reviews and not calling them reviews. Nice.
There’s a threshhold for this type of hype. Up to a point, it gets you excited about the film, but past that point, your excitement starts waning.
Don’t worry, comic book geeks: I’ve read every word of Watchmen and really liked it. But when you keep hearing that Zack Snyder has made as close to a literal adaptation as possible (minus a slightly-altered ending), the question becomes: what’s the point? I’ve already read it. If it’s exactly the same as the graphic novel, I’d rather experience it in my bed and not a crowded movie theater.
Still, that’s just me. You, on the other hand, might be interested in the latest clips:
