Last week's news that the MPAA had slapped Blue Valentine with an NC-17 rating was surprising.

 

While there is speculation that the rating is a bit of a marketing ploy, the fact remains, Blue Valentine is currently an NC-17 rated movie — which has so far been a death-nail for movies in terms of box office.  

 

Blue Valentine has gotten nothing but praise from those who saw a very early screening in January, with Ryan Gosling and Michelle WIlliams both seemingly shoe-ins for Oscar nominations.

 

Blue Valentine tells the story of a couple's deteriorating marriage, and features a few very emotional scenes that are difficult to watch.  One in particular is the reason for the NC-17 rating.
