Weekend Box Office: Toys Will Be Toys

Just like the last two Toy Story films, Toy Story 3 took the #1 spot on its first weekend opening in wide release. It’s on top again this weekend, with an estimated $59 million for its second weekend in theaters.

Toy Story started the trend of opening at #1 back in 1995 (has it really been 15 years?) pulling in $29 million its opening weekend to beat out the likes of GoldenEye and Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls. Three years later, Toy Story 2 beat a Bond flick of its own it’s first weekend out of the box, netting $57 million to outdo both The World Is Not Enough and Tim Burton‘s Sleepy Hollow.

This Weekend, Toy Story 3 held on to the top spot, despite competition from new arrivals Grown Ups and Knight and Day. Adam Sandler‘s latest outing in borderline-crude family comedy was the #2 movie of the week (in more ways than one), bringing in an estimated $41 million. Knight and Day took in a measly $20.5 million, enough to put it at #3.

Karate Kid dropped to #4 with $15.4 million, followed by The A-Team ($6 million), Get Him to the Greek ($3 million), Shrek 4 ($2.9 million), Prince of Persia ($2.8 million), Killers ($2 million), with Jonah Hex rounding out the top ten with $1.6 million.

I’d just like to point out that every single Pixar film has been #1 on it’s opening weekend, and if Toy Story 3 doesn’t go on to gross at least $540 million worldwide, it will be a below-average pixar film (keep in mind that in the history of cinema, only 63 films have made that much. Four of them have been Pixar films, with Wall-E coming up just short of the mark at $532 million, and Toy Story 3 on pace to pass it.)

And I really hope the guys at Pixar never read this, as it might be tantamount to telling a pitcher he’s pitching a perfect game. But please, please keep it up — if you keep making great movies, we’ll keep watching them.
